In June 2022 Michael Smith and Jolyon Ludbrook conceived an idea for a fertiliser online marketplace. Having both worked in the agricultural machinery and fertiliser application scene for some time they were constantly being asked by their clients “Where can I find that fert product”?
The idea and concept for FertFinda was to build an online marketplace that would bring together smaller, independent fertiliser suppliers into one e-commerce platform was born. After 13 months of development and relationship building with suppliers, fertfinda.co.nz is now live – ready to help farmers and growers find the products they need for producing the food we all enjoy.
Michael says “The idea for the Fert Finda Marketplace is simple but there was nothing in the market like it. We realised that farmers and growers would spend hours trying to find different products they had heard about or been recommended and often it simply became too time-consuming for them to find these products.”
Jolyon adds “Then having to buy multiple products from multiple suppliers with different invoices for each one meant that there was simply too much confusion and time wasting around the buying process. So we decided we could simplify it.”
FertFinda works by engaging and listing multiple suppliers’ products on their marketplace website. Farmers and Growers simply ‘go shopping’ as you would on any other e-commerce website, selecting the products and quantities they want and going through a secure checkout facility.
Jolyon says, “We have a secure checkout system where customers can purchase products directly by credit card or we have also developed a membership program called The Fert Club. We wanted to deliver farmers and growers real value so The Fert Club is designed to offer members product discounts, priority purchasing, 20th of the month payment terms, and early access to new products or sale products.”
The founding of FertFinda was also driven by the knowledge that farmers and growers are facing constant pressure to deliver better environmental outcomes on their properties. The current environmental pressure for fertiliser/input reduction means that products such as humates, seaweeds, fish fertiliser, and bio-stimulant products are increasing in their use helping farmers reduce their chemical inputs. But finding them was often difficult and time-consuming.
FertFinda.co.nz solves this problem by listing these products all in one place. Customers can “shop until the cows come home” on the FertFinda website.
Michael says “Many farmers are looking for products in the regenerative farming space. There are a lot of them out there but finding them and trusting them is the hard part. So FertFinda is focused on listing products that are proven to work.”
One of the core innovations of the site is that each product is clearly listed with a ‘compatibility indicator’. This is a simple visual representation of a product’s state (liquid, dissolvable solid, ultra-fine particle, or solid) and is designed to give the user an indication of how or with what machine they should apply the product.
Jolyon says “The Fert Finda Marketplace is designed to take the guesswork out of fertiliser products and their application. We’ve worked hard to make sure each product listed visually tells a customer how to use it, what its NPKS values might be, what its other benefits are and to take some of the mystery away from products that can help farmers reduce their inputs, grow the same or more outputs and have as little impact on the environment as possible.”
For Michael and Jolyon FertFinda is only just at the beginning of its development. Michael says “We have a marketplace up and working now but long term we are wanting to bring in more products and suppliers. We are also looking to develop the site to offer farmers one place to find anything to do with their fertiliser use and application.”
