A soil nutrient test is essential in agricultural and horticultural soils to test for nutrients to evaluate soil fertility and quality. This helps in monitoring fertiliser programs and identifying nutrient deficiencies or toxicities.

The value of a soil nutrient test:
– Assess nutrient levels: Determine if soil nutrient levels are sufficient to support desired plant growth.
– Identify nutrient issues: Detect deficiencies, excesses, or imbalances of major nutrients.
– Guide fertiliser and lime use: Provide a scientific basis for assessing the fertiliser and lime needs of crops and pastures.

This test includes a farm visit to collect soil cores.

A comprehensive soil health assessment is available through the Soil Health package. This includes the Basic Soil Profile, the Sulphur Profile, Anion Storage Capacity, the Organic Soil Profile, and Hot Water Extractable Carbon. Additional testing for heavy metals, such as total cadmium and total copper, may be necessary in some cases.

This test includes Soil pH, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Cation Exchange Capacity, Base Saturation and Volume weight, Sulphur (SO4-S and Extractable Organic S)

It's important to note that soil tests measure only a fraction of the total nutrients available to plants in the short and medium term. Therefore, using standard New Zealand methods for sampling and soil analysis ensures that results are meaningful and applicable to plant growth under New Zealand conditions.
